If you recently purchased your new pillows and your pillow smell like chemicals then don’t worry, we got you covered.

The main reason why your new pillow especially a memory foam pillow smell like a chemical is because it’s in an off-gassing period.

Now, if you don’t know about off-gassing then it’s simple.

The VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are used when manufacturing pillows and certain pillows release a chemical smell because of these VOCs compounds.

But don’t worry.

In this article, we will discuss how to fasten up the off-gassing process of your pillow and removes the chemical smell completely from your pillow.

Main Reason Behind Pillow Smell Like Chemicals

I know, sleeping on a pillow that smells like chemicals can be super annoying.

So you need to know why your pillow causing this chemical smell.

Your pillow causes this chemical smell because your pillow has VOCs(Volatile Organic Compounds) and your pillow slowly releases this compound.

This process is called off-gassing, and when your pillow is in the off-gassing period then your pillow can smell like chemicals.

But don’t worry, we will discuss some proven and tested ways to fasten up the off-gassing smell and removes the chemical smell from your pillow.

3 Ways to Remove Chemical Smell In Pillows

Here are three ways to remove chemical smell in pillows.

Way 1: Air Out Your Pillows

The easiest way to fasten up the off-gassing smell and removes the chemical smell from your pillow is to air out your pillows.

Once you remove the pillow case and wash it in the washer, take your pillow outside in the sun and let it air out for a few hours.

But make sure you do not put your pillow in high humidity or rainy season.

Once you place your pillow outside for air drying your pillow then the pillow can release its VOCs compound quickly.

On Average, a pillow takes up to 3 days until it completely emits the VOCs compound but you can’t put your pillow outside for 3 days right?

In that case, put your pillow in a well-ventilated room.

Way 2: Place Your Pillow in Ventilated Room

This can be an effective way to fasten up the off-gassing period and removes the chemical smell from your pillow.

You need to leave your pillow in another spare room for off-gassing.

But make sure you open the windows and turn on the fans to increase the ventilation of your room.

The more ventilated your room, the faster off-gassing can occur.

Pillows can release an off-gassing smell quickly as compared to mattresses so you don’t need to wait that long.

But if you want to use your pillow right away and remove the chemical smell quickly then follow the next way.

Way 3: Use Essential Oil

As you know essential oil not only neutralizes the bad smell but also makes your pillow smell better and fresh.

Take half a cup of water and add a few drops of your favorite essential oil into it and mix them well.

Pour this solution into the spray bottle and spray the solution on your pillow.

So as soon as you spray this solution, the chemical smell from the pillow will be gone for good.

You can do this process until your pillow completely emits the VOCs compound in them.

Other Methods to Freshen Up Pillows

If the above ways won’t work or if your pillow does not have an off-gassing smell but still smells like chemicals then use these methods to freshen up your pillows and remove the chemical smell from your pillows.

Method 1: Baking Soda

Baking soda is my favorite way to remove chemical and sour smell from the pillows.

Because baking soda not only neutralizes the chemical smell which is coming from your pillows but also freshens pillows.

Sprinkle baking soda on the top of your pillowcase and on the pillows.

Let it sit for a few hours, after that vacuum up all baking soda particles.

Method 2: Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergent and baking soda can be the killer combination to remove chemicals or bad smells from your pillows.

Mix laundry detergent and baking soda and create a paste.

Apply this paste on your pillow, let it dry, and wipe it out with a wet cloth.

But make sure you read the label of your pillow because some pillows can have sensitive materials which can get damaged if the laundry detergent is too strong.

So always check its manufacturer’s label before using laundry detergent.

Method 3: White Vinegar

Like baking soda and laundry detergent, white vinegar is also one of the power full solutions to remove bad smells from your pillows.

Mix half parts of white vinegar with half parts of water and mix them well in a spray bottle but do not shake the solution.

Once the solution is ready then spray the solution on overall your pillow and let it sit for at least 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, take a dry towel or cloth and absorb the excess solution as much as possible.

Once it’s done, you can sprinkle some baking soda on the top of your pillow and let it sit for a few hours, and vacuum up all baking soda particles.

So this is how you can remove the chemical smell from a pillow using baking soda, vinegar, and laundry detergent.

Final Words

If your pillows smell like chemicals that means your pillows are new and are in the off-gassing period.

The chemical smell will fade away on its own in 3 to 5 days so you don’t need to worry too much.

But you can try some different ways to fasten up the off-gassing process.

However, if the off-gassing smell is not fading then you can use baking soda, essential oils, or vinegar to remove the chemical smell.

If you used all of these ways but your pillow still smells like chemicals then you need to return your pillow.

Because problems in the air chambers of your pillow can result in an off-gassing smell that can’t fade.
